ESSE: Cosmetic from South Africa

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet the founder of ESSE, the biochemist Trevor Steyn.

ESSE is a cosmetic brand which produces vegan products without alcohol and animal experiments. The place of production is in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa). The basis for the cosmetics is - in contrast to other cosmetic products - not water but rooibos plant extract, which acts antioxidant and stronger than green tea.
Other fruits that are used in the products: Kigelia - skin firming, anti-inflammatory; Baobab - rich in Omega 3 and reduces DNA cell damage; Amarula - anti -aging effect, 4x higher vitamin C content than oranges.
All the products are aligned to a pH value between 4.5 and 5.5.

We want the best for the customers, even if they don’t know it.

The largest market is Japan. Despite the large exports the products are not adapted to the respective country market, because otherwise "the typical African" would get lost, says Trevor.
A portion of the sale proceeds will be fed into development projects for local farmers.

Vor einigen Wochen hatte ich die Gelegenheit den Gründer von ESSE, Biochemiker Trevor Steyn, kennenzulernen.

ESSE ist eine Kosmetikmarke in Pietermaritzburg (Südafrika), die vegane Produkte ohne Alkohol und Tierversuche herstellt. Als Basis der Kosmetika wird – im Gegensatz zu anderen Herstellern – nicht Wasser, sondern Rooibos-Pflanzenextrakt verwendet, der antioxidantisch wie grüner Tee wirkt.
Weitere südafrikanische Pflanzen, die in den Produkten verwendet werden: Kigelia – hautstraffend, entzündungshemmend; Baobab – reich an Omega 3 und reduziert -Zellschäden; Amarula – Anti-Aging-Wirkung, 4x höherer Vitamin C-Gehalt als Orangen.
Alle Produkte sind auf einen pH Wert zwischen 4,5 und 5,5 ausgerichtet.

Wir wollen das Beste für den Kunden liefern.

Der größte Absatzmarkt von Esse ist Japan. Trotz der großen Exporte werden die Produkte nicht an den jeweiligen Ländermarkt angepasst, da ansonsten “das typisch Afrikanische” verloren geht, so Steyn.
Ein Teil der Verkaufserlöse werden in Entwicklungsprojekte für die Bauern vor Ort gespeist.
